Maybe it’s just not cool enough yet to appreciate a ruby-colored handbag. Normally I’d be all over the Versace Hair-Calf Satchel, but at the moment it seems a bit untimely. It’s got a slight element of fantasy that’s typical of many Versace designs, with its gorgeous hair-calf exterior, matching trim and bold logo medallion. The purse feels glorious to the touch, and there’s certainly nothing to scoff at here - but it might be a bit more appropriate as cooler weather approaches.

Is there such a thing as too functional? Bags like Took Media Handbag by Tod’s are a prime example. It’s very well-made, boasting textured leather in a smart (if somewhat sedate) camel color. Laden with pockets, this bag offers plenty of room for the most enthusiastic of heavy packers - it’s easily the ideal choice for anyone who collects receipts, gum wrappers and makeup without a second thought. On the downside, it’s just not very attractive. The mismatched sizes of the exterior pockets lends the bag an off-kilter look, leaving behind nothing but blandness.

I’m never big on nylon, so I’m not exactly jumping for joy over this Prada Small Chevron Quilted Nylon Dome Bag. Available in black and a lovely prune, the purse’s quilted nylon and ornate handle come off as poshed-up sporty chic. Though I admire the gold hardware, metal feet, and the sophisticated dome shape, I can’t help wishing it came in leather as opposed to nylon.

Forget about keeping a low profile with this sinfully sexy Miu Miu purse swinging from your arm. The Tessuto Vernice Purse is outrageously bold with its shinier-than-your-fave-MAC-Lipglass patent exterior. Peer at its mirror-like surface closely and you could probably touch up your makeup. I love the slight hint of gold hardware - it’s just what this sassy purse needs, without going over the top. Perhaps it’s not a model of practicality, but you’ll find excuses aplenty to carry this stunner.

Man, Marc Jacobs loves his quilted purses. I’m just not as enthusiastic about this Quilted Fabric Stam. The combination of quilted coated canvas (available in light gray or beige) and ostrich leather trim (in brown or mustard yellow) just doesn’t work for me. The colors don’t suit each other and the ostrich is too rustic and Western to work on a glamorous purse like this. I love the stam - just not this version.

Though I love almost anything designed by Jimmy Choo, I’m not quite so impressed with the designer’s Rio Evening Bag. Slickly constructed of suede and leather, it features an adjustable belt detail that somehow seems far too utilitarian for this edgy purse. It’s also slightly ruched on the bottom and wrapped with a flap and golden clasp. In other words, there’s just too much going on here. I would rather carry something more refined when I head out for the evening.

You’ve got to hand it to Victoria Beckham - the lady knows how to dress. I’m blown away not only by her stunning pink Roland Mouret “moon” dress but by the matching pink ostrich Hermes Birkin purse she’s wearing with it. It’s further proof that Posh must have a Birkin in every imaginable color … which isn’t a bad idea considering how timeless and elegant the handbag is.

Ombré leather has really made a statement in recent months, showing up on hoards of stylish bags all over the place. Even Fendi is getting in on the action with the Fendi Embossed Medium Handbag, a piece that exhibits the look to near perfection. You can’t go wrong with brown at any time of the year, but it’s just the thing to grab during fall. This purse also shines a bit in certain lights, making it a standout bag that’s as glamorous as it is functional.
