The distressed calfskin is meant to give it a bit of a throwback feel, but everything else about this handbag – the sleepy color, the dull shape, the uninspired details – is a total mess. And they’ve got to be kidding me with the $1980 price tag.

You could wear this with a Chanel suit, or skinny jeans and a white tank…either way you’ll look sophisticated and stylish.

Proving that you can teach an old handbag new tricks, this Chloe Paddington Capsule Shoulder Bag offers a new spin on the popular Paddington style. Available in slightly distressed-looking charcoal or golden brown leather, the purse bears a heavy gold chain and padlock across the front. I love a little glitz as much as the next person, but the chain’s effect is a little too biker-bar-meets-belly-chain for my tastes. The handbag is also adorned with side buckles and an adjustable shoulder strap. It’s modern, for sure, but there’s something about the forced heavy metal-ness of the bag that just doesn’t resonate with me.

Still dying to get on the patent trend bandwagon but haven’t found the right purse? Try this Chloe Beata Patent Tote, which is slick and glossy but still subtle and versatile – as opposed to those somewhat disposable sex-on-straps handbags that we all drool over but end up wearing just once or twice. Available in taupe or black, this tote’s leather has a distressed appearance, which gives it a nice vintage lure. The front features two pouches, while the sides have studded belt details. In a beautiful shade, this petite Chloe purse is an absolute classic. As ever, it’s ridiculously supple, with an elegance that’s nicely balanced by a bit of rugged charm. You can’t go wrong.

In yet another case of too much going on, Chloe’s Paddington Square Shoulder Bag overwhelms even the most attentive handbag fiend with its detail-laden exterior. There’s nothing wrong with a few fun elements to really spice things up, but they’re less attractive on bulky, extra spacious bags like this one. That said, it wouldn’t be a Paddington without the lock, key and tassels, would it? The shape is a bit unusual and possibly cumbersome, depending on what you’re wearing (I can’t see this being comfortable with a heavy coat, for example). It’s definitely not the most attractive Paddington bag in the world.

Is it possible to stare at a bag for too long? I’m not exactly ogling, but Chloe’s Large Freja Clutch has me puzzled. Its origami roots firmly in place, this purple clutch/envelope/something-or-other is sure to capture some attention, if only because no one will quite know what it is. Wallet gone wrong? Mistake at the factory? The shape is sort of intriguing, though the handbag is simply not versatile enough to convince me to cough up €975.
